Collision Regulations:  (Displaying Lights & Shapes)

Power driven pleasure craft displaying navigation lights.

Power Driven Vessels (less than 12m in length); may exhibit these lights while underway between sunset & sunrise, or during periods of restricted visibility;

  • an all-round light & sidelights. (top illustration)

Power Driven Vessels (12m in length or greater); must exhibit these lights while underway between sunset & sunrise, or during periods of restricted visibility;

  • a masthead light, sidelights, and a sternlight.
(Sailboats, when using their engine, shall exhibit the same light characteristics as other power driven vessels)




Vessels under sail: shall exhibit (if practicable) the following lights while underway between sunset & sunrise, or during periods of restricted visibility;
  • sidelights
  • sternlight.
Notice that a vessel under sail, does not exhibit a white masthead light (no white light visible from directly ahead)..

Options for Vessels Under Sail (Less than 20m in length);
  • may display two all-round lights in a vertical line, the upper one being red, and the lower one green (in addition to the red and green sidelights)
  • must exhibit a sternlight.
  • or, may exhibit a combined sidelights & sternlight in one lantern, carried at or near the top of the mast. (but not in conjunction with the vertical red & green)

Vessels under sail displaying navigation lights.
Often police, fisheries, by-law and other enforcement officers will ride together in one boat.
Sailing vessel less than 7 metres and a human powered boat displaying navigation lights.
Blue flashing light is displayed by Coast Guard and government vessels.

Sailing & Human Powered Boats (less than 7m);  May exhibit sidelights and a sternlight while underway between sunset & sunrise, or during periods of restricted visibility.

  • If she does not, she must have ready at hand a flashlight or lighted lantern (white light) which must be exhibited in sufficient time to avoid a collision.
  • Day Sailing, but also using machinery, must exhibit a conical shape, apex down.

Coast Guard, Police and Government Vessels;

  • will exhibit (when on a mission) a Blue Flashing Light, in addition to the lights prescribed.

Please Note:  Even pleasure craft that are exhibiting the required lights, are not always visible against a backdrop of city or harbour lights, especially boats that are slow moving or stopped.  If you are against such a backdrop, it may be prudent for you to briefly show your flashlight (or spotlight) to a closing vessel . . . just to make sure that you are seen!

Fishing Vessels (trolling = towing baited line)

  • shall exhibit an all-round red light located above an all-round white light.

Fishing Vessels (trawling =  dragging a net)  NOT SHOWN BELOW

(Sidelights are turned on when the vessel is underway)

Fishing, trolling, Not Underway
(Sidelights are turned off when not underway)

Fishing While Underway, with fishing gear out to the side(s), is indicated by a white light or Day Shape as shown, located on the side(s) where the gear is located.
(Sidelights are turned on when the vessel is underway)

Commercial fishing, lights indicate that the vessel is underway and trolling a baited line through the water behind it.
Red all-round over white indicates trolling.
White all-round light out on one side indicates fishing gear is out on that side.
