Collision Regulations:  (For Pleasure Sailing Vessels)

Two sailboats meeting, one is windward of the other.

Sailing Vessel (definition);

  • any vessel under sail, provided that propelling machinery is not being used.
Give-Way Vessel (definition);
  • any vessel that is required to take early & substantial action to keep well clear of others such as; vessels not under command, fishing vessels, grounded vessels and vessels restricted in their ability to change course, or speed - (manoeuvre).
Stand-On Vessel (definition);
  • any vessel that has the right of way & must maintain course & speed.
  • fishing vessels have the right of way.
  • vessels restricted in their ability to manoeuvre, have the right of way.
Determining which of two sailboats, (where the risk of collision exists), has the right of way, depends on which side of a boat that the wind is on, or which vessel is closer to where the wind is coming from.  The vessel closer to where the wind is coming from, is said to be windward of the other vessel.

Windward Side (definition);

  • windward side is deemed to be the side opposite, on which the mainsail is carried.  E.g.  In the picture above the windward side of the sailboat closest to the camera, is this vessels port side.  The vessel further from the camera has the wind on (its) starboard side, and is windward of the sailboat closest to the camera.

Pleasure Sailing Vessels (on a collision course)

  • the operator of a pleasure sailing vessel that has the wind on his or her port side, shall take early & substantial action to keep well clear of pleasure sailing vessels that have the wind on (their) starboard side.
  • A must keep clear of B
Windward sailboat gives way to vessels leeward.

Windward Sailing Vessels (on a collision course)

  • the operator of a pleasure sailing vessel that is windward of other pleasure sailing vessels, shall take early & substantial action to keep clear.
Memory Tip: You are not allowed to steal the wind from another sailing vessel.  If you pass between where the wind is coming from, and the other vessel, you are stealing its wind.
  • B must keep clear of A

Pleasure Sailing Vessels (on a collision course)

  • the operator of a pleasure sailing vessel that has the wind on his or her port side, and cannot determine with certainty whether other sailboats to windward have the wind on their port or starboard side, shall take early & substantial action to keep well clear of those sailing vessels.
