Collision Regulations:  (For Power Driven Pleasure Craft)

Power Vessel (definition);

  • any vessel that is propelled by machinery.
Stand-On Vessel (definition);
  • any vessel that has the right of way & must maintain course & speed.
  • power driven vessels approaching from your right (on a crossing path ahead of you), have the right of way.
  • fishing vessels have the right of way.
  • vessels restricted in their ability to manoeuvre, have the right the of way.
  • vessels and others restricted in their ability to change course or speed - (manoeuvre)

Give-Way Vessel (definition); any vessel that is required to take early & substantial action to keep well clear of others such as; vessels not under command, sailing vessels, fishing vessels, grounded vessels.

Overtaking

  • the operator of a pleasure craft overtaking any vessel must take early & substantial action to keep well clear of the vessel being overtaken. A must keep well clear of B
Vessel overtaking another, must keep well clear.

Power Meeting Power (head-on, or nearly so)

  • the operators of pleasure craft meeting another vessel head-on, or nearly so, shall each alter course to starboard, so they each pass on the port side of the other.
Vessels meeting head on, must each alter course to starboard.
Power boat meeting a sailboat alters course to avoid crossing its bow.

Power Driven Meeting a Sailing Vessel

  • the operator of a power-driven pleasure craft approaching a sailing vessel, shall take early & substantial action to keep well clear, (A must avoid crossing the bow of B).
Underway, but making no wake.

Power Driven Vessels
Since vessels being overtaken, and power driven vessels approaching from the right, have the right of way;

  • A must keep well clear of B

  • B must keep well clear of D

  • C must keep well clear of A & B

  • D must keep well clear of A & C
