Space shuttle prepared to launch.

Before you Cast-Off:

Like an aircraft or space shuttle crew, boaters too need to perform certain checks before departing base,  in order to avoid situations which could lead to emergencies.

Ontario Boating League (OBL)
Incident Reports reveal that mechanical faults don't usually prevent boaters from getting well away from the dock.  For example: If you simply jump in the boat and take off immediately (without checking for an overboard flow of cooling water), and there is none, you'll get perhaps a mile or two away from the dock before it becomes a situation that you simply can't ignore.  Take the few extra minutes (at the dock) to carry out these checks, and you'll be far less likely to become another entry on an OBL Incident Report!

Pre-departure Checklist;

  • Required safety equipment is onboard, it's readily accessible and in good working order.  (E.g. there are enough appropriately sized lifejackets or Pfd's for everyone, flares are not expired, watertight flashlight works, first-aid and personal emergency-kit is onboard),
  • Bilge (deepest inside part of the hull), has been checked for excessive water and any fumes (gasoline, diesel, propane, etc.)
  • Horn and all navigation lights are working,
  • Loose gear is stowed securely, (dock lines & fenders should be stowed immediately after getting underway),
  • Guest have been instructed in safety matters, (at least one other person onboard should be capable of operating the pleasure craft, in case of emergency).
  • Engine & transmission fluid levels have been checked (oil, coolant, throttle & hydraulic steering fluids, etc).  After the engine is started, check for an overboard flow of cooling water.  On an outboard motor, be sure there is a stream of water jetting from the "tell-tale".  On an inboard, listen for the familiar "gush".  (with twin engines, you may have to listen for the gush individually)
  • Fuel supply must be more than adequate. (as a rule of thumb, figure 1/3 out, 1/3 back, 1/3 reserve)
  • Required charts, publications and documents are onboard; don't forget your Operator Card(s) and a photo-copy of your vessels licence - and your dinghy's too!  Be sure to bring your fishing licence and park permits too, if applicable.
  • Weather forecast checked,
  • Alternate route and anchorage's planned (in case of of bad weather, or other difficulties)
  • Marine Radio Checked, and your Restricted Radio Operator Card is with you - if you have a VHF Radio onboard,
  • Cell-phone onboard (with a 12 volt adapter and/or spare charged battery)
  • Sail plan filed with a responsible person on shore.  (you have their number)

If you have family members or guests onboard, it's good to have them participate in performing these checks.  It will help them become more familiar with your vessel, and the location and function of your onboard Safety Equipment.
