Advise your Boarding Party:

Today's personal flotation devices are attractive, comfortable, and effective.  They should be worn whenever on deck or whenever under way in an open cockpit.

  • Even at dockside, insist that young children always wear their Pfd.
  • Climbing aboard or disembarking can be especially treacherous, so always lend a hand!
Girl guides all wearing their pfd's before heading out.

With everyone onboard, the operator of the pleasure craft should inform guests of the following Safety Points;

  • the location of Pfd's & Lifejackets,
  • how to choose the correct size (and don them),
  • how to don them in the water,
  • the effects of cold-shock,  (why it's so important to always wear a Pfd while on deck or in an open cockpit, especially when the water is cold),
  • the location of the first-aid & emergency-kit,
  • the importance of staying low, on the centreline, and holding on to a rigid part of the boat whenever moving around,
  • keep hands, arms & legs well inside the boat whenever leaving or approaching a dock,
  • how to reduce the nasty affects of motion, sunlight, waves, wind, noise & alcohol,
  • what each persons role will be in the event of an emergency, (who takes the wheel if the skipper falls ill?)
