Special Buoys: (continued from previous page)

Control Buoy;

  • marks an area where boating is restricted,
  • is coloured white with an orange open face circle (on two opposite sides) and two horizontal orange bands, one above and one below the circles.  A black figure or symbol inside the orange circles indicates the nature of the restriction.
  • if it has a light, it is yellow and flashing (once every four seconds),
Control buoy.
Information buoy.

Information Buoy;

  • displays by means of words or symbols, information that may be of interest to pleasure craft operators. (for example, "low water")
  • is coloured white with an orange open face square (on two opposite sides) with two horizontal orange bands, one above and one below the square shape.
  • if it has a light, it is yellow and flashing (once every four seconds),

Anchorage buoy.

Anchorage Buoy;

  • marks the perimeter of a designated anchorage area,
  • is coloured yellow with a black anchor symbol (on two opposite sides),
  • if it has a light, it is yellow and flashing (once every four seconds),
Mooring buoys.

Mooring Buoy;

  • used for mooring vessels away from a dock,
  • various shapes, usually coloured white with an orange upper band,
  • be alert to vessels that may be tied to the buoy, but are some distance away - the line may be just below the surface!  (notice the ring on top of the buoy for attaching a line from the boat)
